All Souls Day

Today, November 2nd, is the day we remember and pray for all those who have died.

Catholics from different countries have different traditions for commemorating this day.

In Poland nearly everybody goes to the cemeteries on All Souls Day where candles and flowers will be laid on the graves of the departed.

In Mexico, the people pray for the dead with celebrations that include colourful altars with the favourite food and drink of the deceased, all night vigils at the cemetery and special foods such as pan de muerto [bread of the dead] and miniature skulls made from sugar.

In the Philippines, families light candles and clean the graves. Then on All Souls Day families will visit the graves and there will be parties with food and music at the graves.

Here is a prayer that you can pray for someone you know who has died. And if you do not know anybody who has died then pray for those who have died and have no one to pray for them.

Let perpetual light shine upon them,
with your Saints for ever, for you are merciful.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them,
with your Saints for ever, for you are merciful.
Amen.

Woof!
